Jim Marshall’s memories of James Richard Hayden Rome

Created by James 4 years ago

There is not enough time to fully explain the complexities of Big Jim, as most of us knew him, I was always little Jim.

He was heavily involved in all levels of scouting from an early age up to being a founding member of the “Rover crew” who did much for the good in the surrounding area of Fleet and Crookham.

I grew up with Jim, both our mothers were great friends and it’s fair to say he was like an older brother, I was happy to have him as my best man at my wedding and there have been many happy memories over the years.

He enjoyed holidaying and having all the children about, when often his antics excited and amazed them. The camping and boating breaks wouldn’t have been the same without a drinks trolley! He took everything but the kitchen sink.

He was very proud of his son Richard and all that he had achieved whilst travelling the world and did get to spend time with him on some of them.

One of his favourite times was Christmas when his house and garden would be festooned with lights and decorations, I remember with fondness the time he put plastic holly on the Christmas pudding which was promptly melted having been covered in brandy and set alight.

For much of his career having worked in catering his visitors to the bungalow would always find more than plenty to eat and drink.

Jim settled in Newmarket, his home was completed when he adopted a rescue cat, Tilly, who became a much loved companion who he of course spoilt at every opportunity. He was fortunate enough too to have a helpful neighbour and friend in Mark.

Needless to say he will be missed by us all.
